Christmas message 2017

When I started working for Plessey in Poole in September 1985 as a fresh-faced young graduate, I was introduced to the concept of a "SOFT" report to summarise the progress of a project. As I have just celebrated Christmas for the 33rd time with many of those ex-colleagues (we still meet up once a year despite us all being made redundant in 2002), I thought I'd adopt a similar format for this year's news.

Successes

Still enjoying volunteering for St John Ambulance.
Regularly going on 30-40 mile mountain bike rides.
Over 2000 lengths of the local swimming pool in total during the year.
Great holiday in the USA to see the total eclipse. Click here for the photos.

Opportunities

I hope to play more than one game of cricket next summer.
If the summer is better (and can it be any worse?), to get out more on my kayak.
Barring disasters, to retire in 6 years time.

Failures

I am still exactly the same weight as I was at the start of the year despite vowing to lose 2kg.
Worst-ever season with the bat: I scored a single run.
Only three aikido classes attended all year.
My car had a gentle dispute with a metal pillar in a car park, and lost.

Threats

That tree at the bottom of the garden isn't getting any smaller.
An ever-increasing urge to de-clutter will rob me of leisure time.
Does anybody else find it harder to kneel down nowadays?

Keep smiling, have a great Christmas, and my best wishes to you for 2018.

Nige.
